The First Year Workshop

The First Year: Understanding and Connecting with your Baby

A 2-hr workshop for soon-to-be and new parents

How many parents have wished for a manual for their baby?!

Well, your baby is the manual!

Welcome to parenthood: your most important role in life – a 24/7 volunteer position without training.  The first year of parenthood brings untold joys but many potential challenges, mostly unexpected, that can dampen the joy and interrupt connection.

We all want to be the best parent we can be.  In this information age we can lose sight of facilitating a connection amid the conflicting information and keeping up with the myths of perfect parenthood.  Perfect parenting isn’t possible or even desirable if we think about what babies need – babies need parents who are available and thinking about their baby’s needs most of the time.

Getting to know your baby takes time, just like any relationship: it takes time to get to know someone.

By learning to read and respond sensitively to your baby’s cues and wondering about your baby’s experience of the world (your baby’s internal world), you can enhance the connection between you and help them thrive!

The First Year workshop helps you to:

Learn what your little one needs to feel safe and secure in the first year

  • Tune in to your baby’s needs

Optimise your baby’s social, emotional and brain development

  • Develop into the most supportive parent you can be

Strengthen your capacity to think about your baby’s experience

  • This helps you understand and meet your baby’s needs, as well as your own

The First Year helps you find ways to think about this little person and what they need to flourish.  Be guided through this practical, information-based workshop by an experienced psychologist to help understand and connect with your baby while fostering their development in the first year.

Facilitated by: Dr Bronwyn Leigh, a clinical psychologist, perinatal and infant clinician and early parenting consultant.  Bronwyn is the Director of the Centre for Perinatal Psychology and consults in Fairfield and Ringwood North, Vic.  She has a special interest in the psychological aspects of becoming a parent, the emotional development of infants, and parent-infant relationships. Bronwyn co-authored the book Towards Parenthood: Preparing for the Changes and Challenges of a New Baby.  She loves supporting individuals and couples in the transition from pregnancy to life with a baby.
