By Dr Bronwyn Leigh
SMS4dads is a text-message based resource for new dads providing tips and information from 12-weeks of the pregnancy to 24-weeks post birth. Text messages encourage dads to monitor their own health behaviours, including their diet, exercise, social connections and mood. The messages also include information about baby development and facilitating a positive relationship with their baby. Relationship quality with their partner is also a focus.
The Family Action Centre, at the University of Newcastle has been funded by beyondblue and Movember to conduct research on SMS4dads. Results from the feasibility study are encouraging. Dads were positive in their review of the program, with 92% reporting SMS4dads helped in their transition to fatherhood and 83% saying it helped with their relationship with the mother.
I have had the pleasure and privilege of participating in the research project as a member of the Reference Group, providing feedback on the accuracy and evidence-base of the messages.
